05-Feb-2010 - U18 Dynamo Golden at Winterfest
The Yorkton United F.C. U18 Dynamo arrived at the A.C.F.C. Winterfest Indoor Soccer Tournament with gold medals on their mind after going undefeated in their last tournament but failing to qualify for a spot in the championship. The U18 Dynamo, a mixture of U16 and U18 players, came to the tournament with only 8 players on their roster and missing their head coach Alfredo Bermudez who was out of the country to be with family. It was easy to see that they were a force to be reckoned with as they made easy work of their opponents the Moose Jaw Santos with a 5-0 victory. Goal scorers were Brandon McCallum, Robert Okeny, Rodrigo Uribe, Jacob Okeny, and Anthony "Buzz" Fetsch. Jonny Bell Got the shutout. The next game was against A.C.F.C. Pumas the tournament hosts but Yorkton didn't make for very good guests as they handed the Pumas a 5-0 loss. Scoring for the Dynamo were Robert Okeny with 2, Rodrigo Uribe with 2 and Brandon McCallum. Jonny Bell was in net for the shutout. The final round robin game was versus Oakbank Big Blue from Winnipeg. This was by far the most phisical game of the tournament for Yorkton as the Winnipeg team showed their frustration by getting a little chippy. The Yorkton boys were able to step up and get past the rough play to continue the trend by handing Oakbank a 5-0 loss. Goal scorers were Buzz Fetsch with 3 goals, Caleb Friedrick, and Jacob Okeny. Jonny Bell recorded the shutout. Brandon Campbell also gets an honorable mention as his strong defense had the Oakbank strikers in fits throughout the game. With an undefeated record the U18 Dynamo headed to the gold medal game versus the Swift Current Foresters United. The Yorkton United team caught their opponents napping in the first half as they managed to go up 4-0 before Swift Current responded in the dieing minutes before the half ended. Yorkton's keeper Jonny Bell even managed to pot a goal from his own crease when he sent a long ball up to a streaking Buzz Fetsch who missed tipping the ball but it still managed to fool the Swift current keeper. When it was all finished the boys walked away with a 7-2 victory and the gold medals. Goal scorers were Buzz Fetsch, Robert Okeny with 3, Jonny Bell, Brandon McCallum, and Jacob Okeny. It was a well deserved gold medal as the U18 Dynamo clearly was the dominant team at the tournament even with a short bench and younger players.
03-Feb-2010 - U14 Fury Fall Short At Winterfest
The Yorkton United F.C. U14 Fury participated in the annual A.C.F.C. Winterfest Indoor Soccer Tournament held in Regina on January 29-31st. The team had high hopes coming in to this tournament but fell way short of their goals. The first game was verses Q.C. United a team they had lost to twice before. The first losses to Q.C. came by the way of luck and we were feeling confident that we could beat them. Unfortunately the U14 Fury came out flat and couldn't generate many chances on net resulting in a 2-0 loss. Q.C. really played well and and also added 3 new players to their line up which was quite noticeable. They played like a completely different team and we couldn't break them. The second game was against Eastside Scorpions from Saskatoon. Eastside took an early lead and it wasn't until the end of the game when Jaden Porte put the equalizer into the Saskatoon net. We were creating a lot of pressure in the second half but couldn't get a go ahead goal with the little time left in the game so we settled for a 1-1 tie. This was a better game for Yorkton but we had to rely heavily on our veteran players in the second half. The third game of the round robin was against the Bonivital Flames. They were a skilled team that took a 2-0 lead half way through the first half. Changes were made and Yorkton started to play considerably better. More changes were made at half time and the U14 Fury seemed to carry most of the play in the second half. Finally the team started to click but unfortunately we couldn't find the back of the net and the game ended with a 2-0 score. As a coach I would have to say that this is one of the happiest losses I have ever experienced only because the team started to play a lot better and started to show what they were capable of. At the beginning Bonivital was really out classing us but by the end both teams looked even. Hopefully the team can build on this as we head for Provincials at the end of the month.
03-Feb-2010 - U12 Chelsea and Bulldogs Finish On Top At Winterfest
You couldn’t get a much better weekend for the Yorkton United Under12 program than this past one. Yorkton United F.C. entered two teams, Yorkton United Chelsea and Yorkton United Bulldogs, into the U12 Division 2 ACFC Winterfest tournament in Regina. On Friday, Chelsea started the tournament off with a 4 – 1 win against the AC Pumas Gold of Regina. The Bulldogs followed suit and won by the same 4 – 1 margin against the AC Pumas Red, also of Regina.

The following day had Chelsea playing Prince Albert Celtic. Chelsea started off strong and came away with a 4 – 2 win.

Also on Saturday, the Bulldogs had an easier game against the UCT Tigers from Regina. In a game dominated by the Yorkton team, the Bulldogs won 3 – 1.

Sundays games were all important and were the final round robin games for both teams. Chelsea once again started off the day on a positive note with a 3 – 0 win against REU Helado from Regina. With the win Chelsea finished with a perfect record and advanced to the final. The Bulldogs final game was against a more difficult opponent, the Eastside Spartans, a team from Saskatoon who currently sit 3rd place in their Saskatoon league. It was an exciting game that ended tied at 1 – 1. Based on the point system, the Bulldogs advanced to the finals to play in an all Yorkton final.

Though both Yorkton teams practice and have played together throughout the year, there were no friends during the gold medal game. Both teams probably played their best and most physical game in the final and both teams wanted to win badly for the gold medal and bragging rights. The game ended tied 1 – 1 after regulation time and went into sudden death extra time. Chelsea scored about 4 minutes into extra time to win the game and the gold medal. As head coach Andy Wyatt pointed out, “What a great game and what a tournament! We were competing against some of the top division 2 teams from throughout the Province and to finish the tournament undefeated was great. It is a testament to the commitment of the players and parents to have come out of this 8 team tournament with both a gold and a silver medal. Our program consists of 22 players in the Under 12 age group and to not only compete with but beat the bigger cities of Regina, Saskatoon and P.A. is amazing. I couldn’t be prouder of the kids.”
03-Feb-2010 - Extreme Ladies Win R.S.A. Womens Rec. 1 Tournament
The Yorkton United F.C. Extreme womens team traveled to Regina Jan. 22 to Jan. 24 to compete in the Regina Soccer Association (R.S.A.) Annual Adult Indoor Soccer Tournament and captured the gold medal title in the Womans Rec. 1 Division. To compete in the division is a great test let alone place first for this group of young ladies as the team consisted of players from the age of 19 down to 15 years old.

The Extreme ladies came away with a 4-0 victory in their first game versus R.F.C. from Regina. Goal scorers were Kailee Trost, Ashley Chillog, and Taylor Trost with 2 goals.

The second game was a closer game versus Regina's Q.C. Green. It was a close first half but Yorkton was able to finish with a 3-1 victory. Goal scorers were Kaliegh Trost with one and Taylor Trost with 2.

The third round robin game found the vetern Phoenix squad from Regina no match for the speedy and gritty youth of the Yorkton Extreme as the yorkton walked away with a 6-0 victory. Goal scorers were Taylor Trost with 4 while Braunty Pelchat and Kaliegh Trost addded one each.

With a 3-0 record the Yorkton United F.C. Extreme earned a birth in the semi finals versus the Moose jaw Banditos. The Moose Jaw team was a younger team much like the Yorkton squad but the ladies from Yorkton proved to be the more experianced and skilled as the walked away with a 3-0 win. Taylor Trost had the hat trick.

In the final the Extreme found themselves up against the Q.C. Green whom they had beat earlier in the round robin. Although the Q.C. squad was no cake walk almost scoring on a number of chances the Yorkton ladies won the tournament with a 3-0 victory. Goal scorers were Baylee Tendler, Taylor Trost and Chantel Delong.

It was a great team victory for the Extreme ladies even though looking at the scores it is easy to see that a great deal of the offense came from Taylor Trost with 13 goals on the tournament and Kristine Popik had an amazing tournament with 4 shutouts. She kept us in a few games until we were able to get our offense firing.
02-Feb-2010 - Under 10 Storm win Gold
The Yorkton United Storm Under 10 boys team travelled to Regina this past weekend where that competed in ACFC Winterfest tournament.
The YUFC Storm's first game was against Regina's UCT. It was a hard fought game but Yorkton's Jordin Rusnak scored to give Yorkton a 1-0 win. "I was very happy with how the team played in the first game, we took the game to UCT and had them defending for most of the game. It could have easily been 4-0." says Coach Mike Jakubiec. The next game for the Storm was against Regina's ACFC Red. The Storm was able to score late in the game for the 1-1 tie. Josh Kidd netted the Storm's only goal in game. The Storm's last game was against Regina's ACFC Gold. It was an competitive game with YUFC Storm scoring again late for the 2-1 win. Matthew Mandziuk scored the first goal on a free kick and Nickolas Soumbasis scoring the winner late in the game. With a record of 2-0-1 YUFC Storm finished first in the tournament's round robin and proceeded to the final. In the final, YUFC Storm saw a rematch against Regina's UCT. The game was evenly match and after full time and over time, nothing was decided. It came down to penalty shots which Yorkton won 2-0. "Zach Shearer had a great game in net for us. He finished the tournament with 3 shut outs," says Coach Jakubiec. "I am very happy with how the team played all weekend, we never sat back and defended, we always looked to attack and score goals. Rarely were we not in control of the game." This is the last Tournament for YUFC Storm.

20-Dec-2009 - Y.U.F.C. U12 Bulldogs Saskatoon SISCO Tournament
December 11-13 the Yorkton United Under 12 teams went to Saskatoon to compete in the SISCO tournament. Here is how the Bulldogs did:

The Bulldogs had their first game on Friday night and played a strong team from Humboldt. Unfortunately injuries struck early for the Bulldogs with one player falling ill right before the game and another getting hurt early in the second half. The game started out sloppy and there were few scoring chances. Yorkton scored their lone goal on a throw in by Allison Berg going in off the Humboldt keeper. Humboldt tied the game up shortly after and then ended up scoring the winning goal in the second half. “It was a tough game and I think we were all disappointed how flat we came out in this game. We definitely didn’t play up to our capabilities and we ended up losing 2 – 1 because of it”, says Wyatt.

Saturday morning was the Bulldogs second game which ended up being the toughest contest against the top team in Saskatoon Division 3, the Aurora Eclipse. Yorkton came up on the losing end of a 3 – 0 score. “There is no doubt the better team won that game,” conceded Wyatt. “That Aurora team played great and definitely deserved the win. We had some good moments and had a few chances but it just wasn’t our top game which we needed to beat a team like that.” With the Bulldogs out of the playoffs their final game against the Lakewood Rangers as just for pride. It looked at the start that the Bulldogs pride would take a hit when Lakewood jumped out to an early 2 – 0 lead and another Yorkton player went down to injury. But a brilliant save by the Bulldogs keeper Kyle Schmidt got momentum on Yorkton’s side and they scored 3 unanswered goals to win the game 3 – 2. “What a great way to end the tournament. Unfortunately it took us until the 3rd game but we finally started to play like the team we thought we could be. The kids showed tremendous heart coming back to win this game even though we were behind and were short players. I couldn’t be prouder of the kids,” says Assistant Coach Kat Huxley. Brock Chiasson had 2 goals while Bryce Parnetta scored the other.
20-Dec-2009 - Y.U.F.C. U12 Chelsea Saskatoon SISCO Tournament
December 11-13 the Yorkton United Under 12 teams went to Saskatoon to compete in the SISCO tournament. Here is how the U12 Chelsea did:

Yorkton United Chelsea played their first game of the tournament on Friday night. Chelsea came out strong against the Eastside Eliminators and got an early goal by Ben Fetsch. Unfortunately the Eliminators tied the game up before half. The second half was equally as close with both team getting quality scoring chances and playing a physical game. The Eliminators had a 3 – 2 lead with minutes left but Chelsea tied the game with a beautiful passing play finished off by Spencer Steele. The other Chelsea goal scorer was Ryan Nussbaumer.

On Saturday Chelsea took on the top Division 2 team in Saskatoon, the Aurora Athletics. Once again it was a close game with the Yorkton team hitting the post and getting numerous chances but ended up losing the game 2 – 1. Coach Andy Wyatt was impressed with the play of his team, “It was a really close game and I think the result was a little unfair. We played well enough to win or at least tie but Aurora scored a late goal that somehow made it through 4 or 5 players and past our screened goalie.” Nussbaumer scored the lone goal for Yorkton. With still a chance that Chelsea could make the playoffs their last game was against the Lakewood Force who had won their previous 2 games in the round robin. Much like the previous 2 games Yorkton had a difficult time putting their chances away and ended up with their second tie, 3 – 3. Goal scorers were Michael Dobrowolski, Nussbaumer and Abbey Hollinger.

“Though we didn’t make it through to the playoffs, I was really impressed with the team. It was some tough competition and I thought the kids got better and better as the tournament went on. Our final game against Lakewood was the best game we played. We definitely outplayed them and they were actually lucky to keep it to a tie. Lakewood ended up winning the whole tournament and the only team to take points away from them were us.”
